Surrounding the Phoenix Fold are unique rocks that are strangely shaped like a sofa, so you can take extraordinary pictures here.
Be aware of the tides and winds during your visit
You can go down the cliffs to the seashore to visit the Phoenix Fold. However, the spot where you can get a complete view of the Phoenix Fold is impossible to reach at high tide or on days with strong winds or high waves. Wearing work gloves, sneakers, and a helmet is mandatory when visiting the Phoenix Fold, and you must be accompanied by a Geopark guide (advance reservations are required. Work gloves and helmets are available for rental).
Let’s go a bit further, to Kuroshima
Comprising the islands of Oki no Kuroshima and Oka no Kuroshima as well as some large and small reefs, “Kuroshima” is both a geosite and one of the Eight Views of Susami. When conditions are right, you can observe the rare sight of waves crashing against each other from both directions as low tide approaches. The site is around 5 minutes by car from the Phoenix Fold. Savor the spectacular scenery created by the ever-changing tides and the immovable islands.
*It is not possible to see the waves crashing against each other at high tide.
