Thinking about the whale fishermen of old (Kajitori-zaki Point)

Kajitori-zaki

What can you see in the ocean off Kumano?

Taiji is the birthplace of old-style whaling techniques. The town is shaped such that all of it seems to jut out into the sea. The catching of whales swimming past the town started in 1606. Kajitori-zaki Point is located on elevated land where a “yamami” (mountain lookout) was built for the purpose of watching for whales and to direct boats offshore. You can see traces of the smoke signal sites used to communicate with offshore fishing fleets during a time when no wireless communication existed.

Let’s also visit “Tomyo-zaki Point,” another yamami

Within the town of Taiji there was a second “yamami” located in Tomyozaki. Between Tomyo-zaki Point and Kajitori-zaki Point there is a series of hills and cliffs called coastal terraces that were formed by uplifting each time an earthquake occurred. Let’s think about the lives of the ocean people of long ago who fearlessly headed out to fish in the fields of the great ocean stretching as far as the eye can see.
