Spectacular views at any time from morning until evening.
By day, Senjojiki shines brilliantly white due to the sunlight, while at dusk it turns orange. Senjojiki is one of the most beautiful coastlines within Nanki Kumano Geopark. You can enjoy the spectacular scenery at any moment as its expression changes constantly.
Index
Contrast between the white coast and the blue ocean
The strata formed by shallow seas around 16 million years ago rose with each earthquake, creating a step-shaped rock formation that has been eroded by the constant crashing of the raging waves. As the strata is composed of different sized and colored grains, cross-sections appear layered like a mille-feuille.
Let’s try to find trace fossils and ripple marks
Senjojiki is made up of strata formed by the sediment accumulated in a sea that was less than 100m deep. Within the strata you can observe trace fossils (burrows of organisms that lived on the ocean floor at the time) and ripple marks (traces of the water currents).
