Travel Tips | Hot Spring

A hot spring town with the scent of sulfur (Katsuura Onsen)

The largest number of hot spring sources in Wakayama Prefecture

There are a total of seven hot spring resorts in Nanki Kumano, from Shirahama to Kushimoto. Among these, Nachi Katsuura has some 177 hot spring sources, the largest number of hot springs in Wakayama Prefecture. When strolling around the town, you can smell the faint scent of sulfur mixed with the sea breeze. The main types of springs are chloride springs containing sulfur and simple sulfur springs. These springs are characterized by their high heat retention, and their water does not cool easily.

Katsuura Onsen: hots spring sources centered along the coast

The hot water from the Katsuura Onsen gushes out mainly around the Noroshiyama Peninsula, and the temperature of the water gradually drops as the distance from the coast increases. For this reason, there is a high density of hot spring facilities around Katsuura Bay. You can enjoy both the natural scenery and hot springs, such as cave hot springs located in a rock cave, and footbaths and open-air baths with ocean views.
