Details
Legend has it that this hot spring was discovered at the end of the 5th century when the emperor of the time was on a pilgrimage to Kumano. One theory explaining the spring is that water carried deep underground by plate subduction was heated and rose, mixing with groundwater and seawater and flowing from the cracks in the strata.
