Coal Seam in Taniguchi
谷口の石炭層/Taniguchi no Sekkaiso
Details
Coal is created when biomass collects in shallow seas or wetlands. Here, a coal seam formed in the shallow sea can be seen. In Shingu City there were once seven coal mines called the Kumano Coalfields, which produced the largest amount of coal in the Kinki region. They all closed by 1963. The Taniguchi coal seam here was extracted during this mining period, and this is what remains.
