Sukuma-dani Gorge
救馬溪/Sukuma-dani
Details
The boundary between two geological strata formed in different eras is visible here. This boundary is prone to erosion, creating a natural hollow where Takio Shrine is now situated. The upper strata show advanced weathering and tafoni—a pattern of concave erosion. This site name “Sukuma” means “saving a horse.” It comes from a legend of a lord named Oguri Hangan who prayed here for his sick horse’s recovery, which miraculously occurred.
