志古の貝持嶋

The Kaimochijima Rock in Shiko

志古の貝持嶋/Shiko no Kaimochijima

  • Yoshino-Kumano National Park

Details

This plateau is made of thick sandstone strata. The name “Kaimochijima” means “The island to hold a seashell on” and is derived from a legend that people used to blow a conch shell from this spot to signal when to cut timber and send it down the river. There is a legend that a willow tree over 40 meters high was cut down and used as a building timber for Sanjusangendo, a famous temple in Kyoto, although there is a source that denies this.
