Sabe Onsen

佐部の湯の谷/Sabe no Yunotani

Details

This is the site of a hot spring that naturally welled up until the Showa Nankai Earthquake in 1946. The square well-shaped stone structure remains, and the surrounding bedrock is carved with the words meaning “Medicine Buddha” and a Buddha image, indicating that the area was used as a therapeutic hot spring since ancient times. The hot spring is thought to have emerged along a fault line created by a volcanic eruption about 15 million years ago.
