Details
Magma intruded almost horizontally into the sedimentary rock strata and solidified, forming sheet-like igneous rocks. The regular columnar fractures called columnar joints created by the shrinking of the magma as it cools and hardens create a unique and interesting landscape. The steep rock surface on the opposite side of the Kumano River is also formed from the same igneous rocks.
