The 36 km section of the Kumano River from Hongu to Shingu is called Kuri-kyo Gorge. It is registered as a river pilgrimage route in the World Heritage “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.” The gorge includes both sedimentary rock and igneous rock areas. In the sedimentary areas the valley is wide, and in the igneous areas it’s a steep canyon featuring columnar joints and other interesting rocks. Visitors can experience a variety of scenic views while descending the river on a traditional boat.
