Details
Kashinozaki Point at the eastern tip of Kii Oshima hosts Japan’s first stone lighthouse. It was built by English lighthouse engineer Richard Henry Brunton and lit in 1903. The lighthouse used pyroclastic Utsugi stone, quarried along the Kozagawa River. Nearby is a memorial to the Turkish warship Ertuğrul, which wrecked off the coast of Kashinozaki Point in 1890 and was a catalyst for good diplomatic relations between Turkey and Japan to this day.
