- World Cultural Heritage
- Historic Site (National Designation)
- Yoshino-Kumano National Park
Details
Impressively protruding from the mountainside, Gotobiki-iwa Rock is said to be the place where the deities of Kumano first descended to the earth, and is the sacred object of Kamikura Shrine. At the top of the steep 500-plus steps to the shrine, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Shingu with the sea in the background. It is believed that weathering of the igneous rock mass has given it the rounded shape it has today, and its name means Toad Rock because of its shape. It is the center of a very dynamic fire festival called the Oto Matsuri of Kamikura Shrine (a National Intangible Folk Cultural Heritage), which is held every February.
