- Historic Site (Prefectural Designation)
Details
Ippen-shonin, a famous monk who lived in the Kamakura period (1185–1333), is said to have erected this stele in 1280. Ippen-shonin reached satori, or enlightenment, here in Kumano then traveled the country promoting the practice of chanting “Namu Amida Butsu,” “I take refuge in Amida Buddha.” You can see that sentence engraved in the sandstone monument. After it broke in an earthquake, it was repaired during the Edo period by fitting it into an igneous stone carved to contain it.
