Ichinose-oji
一瀬王子跡/Ichinose-oji ato
- Historic Site (Prefectural Designation)
Details
Ichinose-oji is one of the Kumano Ninety-Nine Oji, which are shrines along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. Rituals such as chanting sutras were conducted at each Oji during pilgrimages. Ichinose was significant as the first place where pilgrims crossed the Tonda River to enter Kumano. Here, pilgrims performed the “Misogi” purification ritual by entering the river. Historically, it is believed that the river ran closer to Ichinose-oji and formed shallow rapids at this location.
