In the old days, the pilgrims of Kumano had abandoned their horses at Inabane Oji (on the opposite shore of Tondagawa River) to cross the river at Ichinose. This was the place to perform a ceremony of purifying oneself by pouring cold water upon oneself before visiting the sacred Kumano.
