The mudstone of the lower layer had penetrated the upper layer of the Tanabe strata and formed a mud diapir. Earthquakes had caused the deep underground mud to liquefy and seep through the upper layer to form mud diapirs. When this liquefied mud erupts underwater or above the ground, it turns into mud volcanos. The Kumano-nada is a mud volcano in the ocean, and Niikappu in Hokkaido has a mud volcano that had erupted on the surface of land.
