Details

This small mountain is made of igneous rock and has been considered a sacred mountain where deities descend since ancient times. At the foot of the mountain is Asuka Shrine, which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.” The remains of a pit dwelling were found in the precincts of the shrine. It is said that when Jofuku came in search of an elixir of eternal youth on the orders of an emperor of ancient China, his party landed here.
