The island is made of floating bodies of peat. The west side of the island is assumed to be floating, but the outer parts of the island is fixed to the ground by the inflow of sand and soil. The island implies that there were ponds and swamps in the inner part of the Ojigahama coast back in the old age. It was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1927.
