Tsubaki Onsen
椿温泉/Tsubaki Onsen
Details
Legend has it that this hot spring resort was discovered in the middle of the Edo era (1603-1867) when a person saw a white heron healing a wound on his foot. Some people may find it strange that a hot spring flows here in the absence of vulcanism. As is the case with Shirahama Onsen, one theory is that the subduction of tectonic plates carries water deep underground, raising the temperature of the water, which then rises, mixes with groundwater and sea water, and gushes out from cracks in the strata.
