The Mushikui-iwa Rock in Horo
保呂の虫喰岩/Horo no Mushikui-iwa
- Natural Monument (Prefectural Designation)
Details
There are numerous holes in the rock wall, called ‘worm-eaten’ in Japanese. The rock is a rather rough grain sandstone, and the holes are thought to have been created by weathering that caused the rock surface to flake off. Legend has it that the flaking sand can cure skin ailments. The local people also pray to the small Vairocana Bhudda Hall beside the Mushikui-iwa Rock for recovery from illness, and in the past, for the health and safety of cattle that worked on farms.
