Sandanbeki Rock Cliff
三段壁/Sandanbeki
- Scenic Spot(National Designation)
- Yoshino-Kumano National Park
Details
Along with Engetsuto Island, this is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Shirahama Town. The cliffs are more than 30 meters high, created by wave erosion. Visitors can access the cliffs from the parking lot and enjoy a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. The cliffs are the result of the strata of sand and pebbles that accumulated in the shallow sea and were hardened by heat. There are remains of mines in the surrounding area. Metallic elements such as iron and copper seep through the strata, causing parts of the cliffs to turn yellow to brown tones. Near sea level there is a cave formed by erosion. You can visit mine ruins and the cave by a paid elevator ride.
