Shirahama Onsen
白浜温泉/Shirahama Onsen
- Historic Site (Town Designated)
Details
Also known as ”Muro no Yu,” this is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan, with records in ancient Japanese documents. The temperature of this hot spring is high, and its predominant mineral is sodium bicarbonate, which is effective in promoting blood circulation. One theory as to why there are hot springs in this area even though there is no volcano nearby is that the subduction of tectonic plates carried water deep underground, raising the temperature of the water, which then rises, mixes with groundwater and sea water, and gushes out from the cracks in the strata.
