Kushimoto Marine Park
串本海域公園/Kushimoto Kaiiki Koen
- Ramsar Convention Designation
- Yoshino-Kumano National Park
Details
The Kushimoto coast hosts the world’s northernmost large coral community, thriving due to warm water temperatures provided by the Kuroshio Current. This coral community, which flourishes beyond typical coral latitudinal ranges due to these warm currents, was registered as a wetland under the Ramsar Convention in 2005. Coral remnants found on the beaches here have historically been used as material for lime plaster.
