Jigoku-no-Kama Cave
地獄の釜/Jigoku no Kama
- Yoshino-Kumano National Park
Details
At Kii-Oshima Island, a large vertical hole in the ground on a high coastal terrace penetrates like a tunnel all the way to the shore. It’s thought to have been a sea cave formed by wave erosion of a stratum of solidified volcanic ash ejected from an undersea volcano. Later, the ceiling of the cave collapsed, creating the hole that connects the upper terrace and the beach below like a curved funnel, as we see today. It is recorded that it was called “Jigoku,” meaning “hell,” by local residents from long ago.
