Details
Large-scale volcanic activity in Nanki-Kumano about 15 million years ago created this pyroclastic rock, composed of hardened ash and other materials, It has holes of many shapes, including peony flower, called “Botan” in Japanese. Weathering is thought to be caused by the formation of gypsum and other crystals carried by water, which cause the rock surface to flake.
