The Mushikui-iwa Rock in Takaike
高池の虫喰岩/Takaike no Mushikui-iwa
- Natural Monument (National Designation)
Details
This igneous rock was formed in the huge volcanic activity around the Kumano Caldera about 15 million years ago. Subsequently, the surface of the rock was weathered by a phenomenon called tafoni, resulting in this appearance, which Japanese people call ‘worm eaten.’ Local belief says that offering a pebble with a hole to this rock can cure ear diseases.
