Details
This rock is a memorial to the victims of the 1846 mudslide. It was left in place after it was washed into the rice paddies by the mudslide. Many of the rice paddies in the Irokawa area are built on gentle slopes created by the mudslide. These memorial rocks can be seen in other places as well, and serve as a way of passing on the memory of the disaster.
