Kushima island and Suzushima island
孔島・鈴島(クシマ・スズシマ)/Kushima/Suzushima
- Natural Monument (City Designated)
- Yoshino-Kumano National Park
Details
These islands can be accessed from the coast on foot. Suzushima Island to the north features nearly vertical strata caused by deformation of the crust by tectonic movement. There are also biological remains which can be used to infer past earthquake activity. Kushima Island to the south is a breeding ground for a rare bird, the Styan’s Grasshopper Warbler. Known for their lovely chirping, they only migrate via islands where there are few predators. Also, as many as 120 varieties of warm-ocean coastal plants can be observed here.
