Details

Kitayama-kyo Gorge is a 600-meter-deep V-shaped valley. It was formed over a long period of time as the hard strata on both banks were slowly eroded. Timber used to be tied into rafts on the Kitayama River and transported downstream to Shingu City at the mouth of the river. Rafts are no longer used to transport lumber, but the “Kitayama River rafting technique” is preserved by the sightseeing rafts.
