The Iwakura Rock in Shiko
志古の磐座/Shiko no Iwakura
- Yoshino-Kumano National Park
Details
Large slabs of sandstone collapsed here, and a shrine was created with these as the object of worship, rather than erecting a shrine building. Sandstone is formed by horizontal depositions on the sea floor, and when it becomes rock the borders between the layers are more prone to breaking. It’s thought that these large slabs broke along these layer boundary lines to form this feature.
