The Shishi-kura Rock in Tanago
田長の猪岩/Tanago no Shishikura
- Yoshino-Kumano National Park
Details
This monolithic rock formation in the Kuri-kyo Gorge area of Kumanogawa is composed of pyroclastic rock such as compacted volcanic ash, from the huge volcanic activity of around 15 million years ago. This is the same rock as the Ichimai-iwa Monolith in Kozagawa. An illustrated guide to the geological scenery of Wakayama published in the 1800s said, “The shape of the mountain shows its power like that of a ferocious beast. It is the most unusual mountain in the Kumano River.”
