Shingu Castle Ruins
新宮城跡／shingu-jo ato

Details
This castle sat on a mountain of igneous rock at the mouth of the Kumano River. Its stone walls are also made of igneous rock quarried in the Kumano area. This location was once a hub for water transportation, and during the Edo era, large quantities of charcoal were shipped from here to Edo, which is now Tokyo. Along the nearby river, ruins of warehouses and other structures related to the port town from the 12th to 16th centuries have been excavated, providing hints about the economic conditions and distribution routes of the time.
